INTRODUCTION OF 10TH KOREAN CULTURE DAY

For the past decade Korean culture has been spreading all around the world mostly
through their pop culture. Korean culture started from its 1st hallyu phase by
introdoucing k-drama and it all continues to its second and third phase which are k-pop
then continued by k-culture, a mix of korean fashion, food and lifestyle. Korean culture
has made a big impact on the world including our country, Indonesia. In these past few
years Korea and Indonesia have been building cooperative relationship not only on
political field but also in economic, education and culture.

The relationship between these two countries has provided us, Korean Literature and
Culture Department of Universitas Indonesia, to held an event carrying a different theme
each year focusing on Korea’s culture, hence the name of the event Korean Culture Day.
On this 10th Korean Culture Day, we want to give you something different to celebrate a
decade of the biggest event organized by the students of Korean Literature and Culture
Department.

This year we want to present to you not only Korea’s moderns side of culture but also
bringing you Korea’s traditional culture. We want to show the audience that Korea does
not only have its pop culture such as the 3 hallyu phase that were mentioned, but Korea
has its own modest yet beautiful tarditional culture. Through the theme Lantern
Festival based on the Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival we want to give you the feeling
and atmosphere of attending a real Korean festival where you can see the culture and
celebrate its festivity.

Based on the history behind Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival, it originates from the
lantern lighting custom used during the Jinjuseong Fortress Battle of the Imjinwaeran
War in 1952 when Korea was occupied by the Japanese. The lanterns was used as a
military strategy to prevent Japanese troops from wading the Namgang River. The
floating lanterns represents personal wishes of the citizens along the Namgang River.
Therefore, on our 10th Korean Culture Day’s event closing we will be flying lanterns that

will represent every audience’s dreams. So this year we want you to be a part of us and
let us light up your dreams.
